Like Tia, I always knew I had something to say. But, unlike Tia, it took me some time to find my voice and build my creative confidence.
As a youth, I searched for ways to express myself, dabbling in various mediums like drawing, writing, music, photography, and design. But I didn't have access to support systems and resources that could help me build and hone my skills. I felt stifled and full of angst, wondering if I would ever actualize the potential I knew I possessed. It wasn't until I reached high school that I began to find educational experiences that aligned with my passions.
I took journalism and photography courses, learned how to shoot on film, retouch photos, and create layouts. My voice grew stronger, my point of view became clearer, and I gained the confidence to share my creations with the world because I had something to say.
I credit the journalism, photography, and design coursework I did in high school for setting the wheels in motion and kickstarting my career path. This is why I support WIDE ANGLE YOUTH MEDIA. Because they are providing the next generation of media makers, creatives, and leaders with the experience they need to succeed and build a better life.
