“You can’t change the narrative without changing the people who write the narrative".
- Destiny Brown, Media Instructor and Wide Angle alumna

Picture it: a #FutureSoColorful that media reflects the full spectrum of voices in our society. Since our founding in 2000, we’ve worked towards this reality. To date, over 5,800 young people in Wide Angle’s classrooms have created hundreds of media projects about issues like climate justice, community safety, identity and Black Lives Matter. Together, their insightful stories have reached over 2 million audience members across the globe.

As we celebrate two decades of media making, we reflect on the relevance of our work. 2020 underscored the transformative power of media: a cell phone video ignited a racial justice movement, and online platforms connected us when we couldn’t be together. 2020 showed us the importance of diverse representation - within institutions, among our policy makers, and particularly in the media. We were reminded that who tells the story is actually part of the story, too.

Now, we make the most of this moment. We center narratives that confront insidious stereotypes. We depict individuals with all of their nuance and humanity. We amplify youth voices and empower diverse storytellers. In short, we stay true to our mission and focused on our cause. In 2021 and beyond, Wide Angle Youth Media is building a more colorful world through new initiatives, dynamic partnerships, expanded program offerings, and holistic supports for our young people.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a society illuminated by an array of perspectives is priceless. Your gift today will have an immeasurable impact on the next generation of media makers. By providing the tools for young people to elevate their talents, exercise their artistic craft, and gain confidence to speak up and speak out on social issues that matter - you help to ensure that they thrive into the next decade.
