The closest thing I ever did to an apprenticeship was an internship at a PR firm after my freshman year of college. I wasn’t just answering phones, I was actually working with a client, The City of Tallahassee, to reassure the public about a controversial road project. I conducted interviews, wrote press releases, and worked with the media. I got to go on site and help to document and describe the benefits of the project. I still think of that summer as one of the most impactful in my career. I walked away with real skills, a portfolio of work, and a new professional network. Even though I was a great student, I’m not sure I ever would have been given that opportunity if my dad didn’t know the owner of the firm. In fact, my first few jobs all came through family connections.

One of the things that is so powerful about Wide Angle’s apprenticeships is that you can come in with no network or experience and leave with deep assets in both. Life-changing assets. Media remains one of the most exclusive fields. Most internships are unpaid, even with a college degree, and the equipment costs are prohibitive for many people. It can be nearly impossible to break through the barriers to entry without an inside connection or the ability to work for free. At Wide Angle, apprentices learn alongside professionals in their field, use state-of-the-art equipment and amass a portfolio of work for real clients. They break through every barrier to entry and move on to successful careers in media.
