What do masked superheroes, dinosaur-shaped nuggets and little green aliens have in common?!? They’re all featured in some of our favorite Baltimore Speaks Out (BSO) projects! As any tween parent or educator will tell you, middle schoolers are often brimming with energy and conjuring up big ideas.

At Wide Angle, their youthful enthusiasm is encouraged and supported through purposeful play, as they harness the tools of media making to bring their artistic dreams to life. In our classrooms, they can choose to confront the world’s complexities head-on in a doc-style short, or leave it all behind to produce a school lunch zombie spoof. Either way, our media instructors meet students where they are, allowing them to guide the process. Building a space where youth can push creative boundaries, develop playful plotlines, and use advanced equipment, is part of our approach.

For many participants, BSO will be their first opportunity to use state-of-the-art technology or work with media educators and professionals in the field to hone their creative crafts. Through student-centered lessons, they cultivate technical skills and level up their media production in photography, video, animation, audio, and graphic design.

Your gift will help bring BSO workshops to 90 students this year, as we add a third school-based site to our middle school offerings. Who knows what our students will dream up this year? Whether it’s the latest TikTok dance sensation or a PSA about public transportation, your generosity will provide opportunities for energetic, imaginative young media makers to tell their stories.

With middle schoolers, it can feel like anything is possible. Dream big with Wide Angle and make a gift today!
